Ault traces its origins to the expansion of the Union Pacific Railroad. The settlement was eventually renamed after Alexander M. Ault, a local grain merchant who saved surrounding farming families from financial ruin by purchasing their wheat harvests during the agricultural crash of 1897. Today, the town serves as the gateway to the Pawnee National Grassland and embraces its name with the slogan “A Unique Little Town.” In 2001, with a modest grant of $9,500 from Great Outdoors Colorado, the town established a simple, modular pre-fabricated metal skatepark mounted on an asphalt pad for local youth. Recently, the Ault Skatepark at West Park received a much-needed update, transforming it from its early 2000s pre-fab origins into a smoother, more modern skatepark.
The upgraded facility spans 5,750 square feet and has replaced the rough asphalt conditions of the past, providing locals with a contemporary space to skate. The new layout retains the accessible, quiet charm of a small town while enhancing the flow across its bank ramps, quarterpipes, and flat rails. Ault Skatepark continues to be a modest neighborhood park rather than a large urban destination.
