Akron’s history dates back to 1882, during the westward expansion of the railroad. It was homesteaded by George Valentine Baker and his wife, Anna. The settlement developed around rail commerce and agriculture before officially incorporating in 1887. The town was named by Lucy Mitchell, the wife of a railroad official, who chose the name in honor of her hometown of Akron, Ohio. The name is derived from the Greek word “ákron,” meaning summit or high point, signifying the town’s geographic position as a high point along the railway line. It served as a central gathering place for the rural community.
Pool Park is named after its main feature, the municipal Akron Swimming Pool. In 2010, the Akron Skatepark opened within Pool Park. Constructed by the American Ramp Company, this compact 2,750 sq.ft. facility features modular pre-cast concrete obstacles set on a smooth concrete pad. Designed for daily neighborhood sessions, the skatepark includes a street and transition layout with banks, quarter pipes, a funbox setup, manual pads, ledges, and a flat rail. Although modest in scale compared to major urban plazas, this free public park provides an accessible and versatile location for local skateboarders, BMX riders, inline skaters, and scooter enthusiasts in the heart of the Eastern Plains.
