📚 THE STORY BEHIND THE PARK: (click here to read more)

At an elevation of 10,578 feet in Park County, Alma is recognized as the highest incorporated municipality in the United States. The town was settled in 1871 during the Gold Rush and quickly grew around the Mount Bross and Mount Lincoln mines. Local history attributes the town’s name to J.B. Stansell, who built a cabin for a merchant named James, who then named the settlement after his wife, Alma James. During its peak in the 1870s, Alma had thousands of residents and lively dance halls. However, a catastrophic fire in 1937 swept through downtown, destroying most of the historic wooden storefronts. The community was subsequently rebuilt into a tight-knit mountain enclave, maintaining its rugged high-country charm while hosting the highest operational post office in the nation and its central civic space, Alma Town Park.

Located within Alma Town Park off Buckskin Road, the Alma Skatepark has gained recognition as one of the two highest-elevation public skateparks in North America (the other is in Leadville). Nestled in a multipurpose community park that features a disc golf course and a playground, the skatepark offers panoramic views of the Mosquito Range. It consists of a compact concrete pad equipped with pre-fabricated modular steel ramps, which include a small bank ramp, a low quarter pipe, a flat bar, and a central funbox with a ledge and rail. Operating under high-alpine winter conditions for much of the year, this small park provides a nostalgic modular feel and serves as an unforgettable high-country stop for road-tripping skaters.
