Scott Carpenter Park honors Malcolm Scott Carpenter, a Boulder native who became one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts and the second American to orbit Earth. Located along 30th Street, the park sits in a city founded during the 1858 Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, named for the granite boulders lining Boulder Canyon. Over the decades, Boulder has evolved from a mining supply outpost into a vibrant scientific and cultural hub. Notably, it was the first city in the nation to pass a greenbelt tax in 1967, permanently protecting the Flatirons backdrop. This combination of historical civic planning and recognition of space exploration creates a unique setting for one of the region’s most iconic action sports destinations.
First opened in 1999, the Scott Carpenter Skatepark originally covered 16,000 sq.ft. and quickly established Boulder as a key location in the skateboarding scene, thanks to its deep vert bowls and graffiti-covered concrete flow sections. In 2021, Evergreen Skateparks expanded the facility by an additional 5,000 sq.ft., bringing the total area to 21,000 sq.ft. This modern addition features signature organic pump-track geometry, rolling speed mounds, transition hips, and a flowy street plaza section that seamlessly integrates with the original deep transition bowls. Today, the park represents two distinct eras of Colorado skate architecture, offering deep vert carving opportunities for bowl riders alongside smooth, continuous lines for street and technical skaters.
