📚 THE STORY BEHIND THE PARK: (click here to read more)
Gisella Fiou Park is named after a beloved long-time resident who served as a vibrant pillar of civic life in the Roaring Fork Valley for many years. Although she had no direct ties to skateboarding, her legacy is honored through the park’s unique piece of public art, the “Gisella Fiou Park Tree Sculpture.” When a significant tree on the property began to die, local artist Thomas Barlow transformed the remaining trunk into a mixed-media masterpiece. He carved native wildlife, such as eagles and trout, into the wood and wrapped it in sculpted metal, heavy chains, and reclaimed skateboard wheels, directly connecting the piece to the local skateboarding culture.
The skatepark itself was built on the same community spirit that Gisella exemplified. It originated as a grassroots movement led by a dedicated group of local middle schoolers in the late 1990s. After raising their own funds and petitioning town officials for a dedicated place to ride, Basalt secured a $25,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado in February 2001 to complete the skatepark, which features mini-ramps, spines, quarterpipes, and funboxes. Thanks to continuous upkeep and thoughtful layout updates from the local recreation department, this scenic spot along the river corridor has thrived as a cherished hub for both transition and street skaters.
