Buena Vista is situated in the Upper Arkansas River Valley, nestled between the Sawatch Range and the Continental Divide. The town’s origins date back to 1879, when miners, ranchers, and railroad workers settled in the valley. Its name, derived from Spanish meaning “beautiful view,” was chosen by early residents inspired by the stunning backdrop of nearby fourteeners like Mount Princeton and Mount Antero. Locally pronounced “Byoo-na Vista,” the town originally served as an important transportation hub along the Denver and Rio Grande Railway, providing support to surrounding gold and silver mining camps. Over the years, it has evolved into a premier destination for outdoor recreation along the Arkansas River. At the heart of the town, River Park is the main municipal green space located at the eastern end of Main Street, near the historic community center. This park serves as a focal point for local river sports, trails, and other public outdoor amenities. Just south of the Buena Vista Community Center on Cedar Street, the Buena Vista Skatepark is a central destination for both local and visiting skaters in Chaffee County.

Before the current concrete facility was built, local skaters had to rely on a modest pre-fabricated setup on Cedar Street, which included wooden and metal bank ramps, quarter pipes, and low flatbars. To better support the growing action sports community, the town replaced the old modular park with a permanent poured-concrete facility located within River Park’s recreation grounds. The modern skatepark features smooth flow elements and a clean street section, offering low quarter pipes, open bank hips, flatbars, and grind ledges, all with magnificent views of the surrounding Collegiate Peaks. Surrounded by the Arkansas River, disc golf courses, and mountain trails, this high-country skatepark offers a scenic and smooth stop for road-trippers traveling along the Highway 24 and Highway 285 corridors.
