📚 THE STORY BEHIND THE PARK: (click here to read more)
Breckenridge was founded in 1859 during the Gold Rush and is named after Vice President John C. Breckinridge. Initially, settlers spelled the town’s name with an “i” to secure a post office. However, when Breckinridge supported the Confederacy during the Civil War, Unionist residents changed the spelling to an “e” to strip him of the honor. The surrounding park has a fascinating history as well. In 1936, residents discovered that an official federal map had mistakenly left Breckenridge off entirely. In a lighthearted reaction, local citizens declared their area “No Man’s Land” and dubbed it the “Kingdom of Breckenridge.” Although the region is officially part of Summit County, the nickname persisted, ultimately leading to the establishment of Kingdom Park, which features a recreation complex.
The Breckenridge Skatepark, originally built inside Kingdom Park by Team Pain in 1999, is one of the premier high-altitude concrete skateparks in the Rocky Mountains. Team Pain returned to expand the park significantly, creating a 17,000 sq.ft. facility that accommodates all types of terrain. The layout includes a beginner bowl, a speedy snake run filled with hips and volcanoes, and a deep eleven-foot advanced bowl equipped with pool coping. Recent upgrades for street skating added stairs, ledges, handrails, and hubbas, along with a unique touch: an authentic, skateable historic iron mine cart embedded directly into the concrete, combining local gold-mining history with exceptional skate terrain.
