Located within Main Street Park at the corner of Main and 2nd Street, Berthoud’s original skatepark serves as a vintage time capsule of Northern Colorado’s action sports history. Before the town opened its modern concrete plaza at Waggener Farm Park in late 2021, local skaters relied entirely on this compact modular setup. Built by the American Ramp Company in the late 1990s, the park features classic steel quarter pipes, bank ramps, and grind rails mounted on a 2,000 sq.ft. concrete slab. The unlit and uncrowded area offers a quiet spot for street practice, flatground warm-ups, and low-key sessions away from larger crowds.
Beyond the ramps, the surrounding town has a unique history. Originally settled along the river bottom as Little Thompson, the community renamed itself after Captain Edward L. Berthoud, the chief engineer who surveyed the railroad route through the valley. During the winter of 1883, residents literally moved their entire town on wooden skids a mile uphill to its current location so steam locomotives could avoid the steep grade out of the river valley. Long known as the Garden Spot of Colorado for its historic agricultural fields, Berthoud retains its small-town charm, making the old metal ramps at Main Street Park a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring Front Range skate history.
