Located at the west end of Mill Street inside Joe Stephenson Park, the town’s largest municipal park, the Bayfield Skatepark is a cherished part of the local community. The park honors Joe Stephenson, a significant local figure who played a crucial role in developing Bayfield’s early civic infrastructure and park system. Initially built as a simple concrete pad with modular ramps, the skatepark quickly became a beloved hub for local youth. However, after years of exposure to the harsh freeze-thaw cycles of southwest Colorado, the surface has cracked and degraded, creating real hazards for skaters. To revitalize the space, Bayfield’s Citizens Park and Recreation Committee is working on a comprehensive renovation plan. This initiative aims to breathe new life into the skatepark and provide a welcome economic boost to the small businesses located just a block away.
The upcoming redesign intends to replace the aging ramps and smooth out the weathered concrete, transforming the skatepark into a top-tier riding environment. In addition to addressing long-overdue safety concerns, the project plans to expand the park’s overall footprint to create smoother, flatter areas that cater specifically to beginners and younger children. This updated layout will offer an accessible space for riders of all skill levels, ensuring that people of every age can practice safely. By enhancing the features and restoring the riding surface, the town hopes to create a vibrant, inclusive gathering spot that serves local families while attracting outdoor enthusiasts from across the region.
